As the sunset dropped behind the Santa Rosa Mountains and the palm trees become backlight in silhouettes, the colors seemed to linger leaving this beautiful and brilliantly colored backdrop for my image, coined Amigos.
Silhouette photography is a wonderful way to convey drama, mystery, emotion and mood in a picture. I have spent many hours contemplating what emotions an evening's sunset might evoke on any given day in the Coachella desert communities. But on this evening at dusk, the sunset sky with its brilliant colors appeared more dramatic by framing the silhouette palm trees in it than in its usual multicolored appearance.
Since childhood, Aristotle's quote, "Where there is no vision, the people perish," has been a huge influence on me. I continue to extend and interpret its meaning through my photography as I capture images that hopefully inspire, amuse and gladden. At the same time, perhaps my images will also help document the beauty of Mother Nature and our responsibility to care for her. Following a three decade career in public education, as a teacher and then principal for the Los Angeles Unified School District, I began a new career quite serendipitously as a professional landscape, wildlife and jazz photographer of California's majestic Eastern Sierra mountains.
