Description
On a chilly early morning visit to Mono Lake, in California, I was particularly struck with the haunting beauty of the fog, hoarfrost, and the feathery ice crystal deposits on the lake, trees and grass. Native Americans coined it 'pogonip.' It is formed by direct condensation of water vapor to ice at temperatures below freezing. it occurs when air is brought to its frost point by cooling. You can find it in the mountain valleys in western United States.
