On a crisp fall morning just after sunrise, above Bishop, California, the cerulean blue skies made for this photographer's delight. Capturing the autumn aspen reflections and granite textures on the still calm water was a huge reward for the days early efforts to get there.
Setting the alarm for 3 AM gave me time to make the arduous predawn drive the narrow, cliff-hugging, winding road until it hugs the south shore of North Lake, up to the lakes elevation of 9,350 feet. This gave me enough time to stake out and decide on a location around the lake that would showcase the reflections of the brilliant colored aspens and granite textures as the sun rose over the mountain top.
At first, there was not a cloud in the sky to help format the scene that I had expected to capture. But a quick shift of gear to another point of view, let me see my subjects from a different angle; I liked it even better than what I had planned initially.
Since childhood, Aristotle's quote, "Where there is no vision, the people perish," has been a huge influence on me. I continue to extend and interpret its meaning through my photography as I capture images that hopefully inspire, amuse and gladden. At the same time, perhaps my images will also help document the beauty of Mother Nature and our responsibility to care for her. Following a three decade career in public education, as a teacher and then principal for the Los Angeles Unified School District, I began a new career quite serendipitously as a professional landscape, wildlife and jazz photographer of California's majestic Eastern Sierra mountains.
