It was a clear and sunny day as we made the famously scenic 17 mile drive up the Monterey Coastline, in California during our belated honeymoon, many sunsets ago. However, the cheerful mood I felt and wanted to convey in an image quickly changed, as did the weather.
Within minutes of arriving at the location of the famous landmark, Big Sur's lone cypress looked suddenly more forlorn and lonely against the ominous sky than when we arrived. As the sunlight streamed through the clouds and hit the calm Pacific Ocean, it created a silhouette image of the foreground trees. I loved the contrasting elements and moods the abrupt change of weather provided for this image. From cheerful, to hopeful via ominous ...it is all reflective in nature.
The LA times stated, "This tree is to the Monterey Peninsula what the pyramids are to Egypt, what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris." It is one of the most popular photographed trees in the US.
Since childhood, Aristotle's quote, "Where there is no vision, the people perish," has been a huge influence on me. I continue to extend and interpret its meaning through my photography as I capture images that hopefully inspire, amuse and gladden. At the same time, perhaps my images will also help document the beauty of Mother Nature and our responsibility to care for her.
