Artist's Description
"Woolly" is the popular mammoth bronze statue by artist Douglas Van Howd that is located in front of the Mammoth Ski Area at an elevation of 8000 feet. Installed in front of the Main Lodge, it has been the mascot and symbol for the Ski Area since its dedication for Dave Mccoy's 75th birthday.
Dave was the founder of this famous mountain resort and a visionary who, in addition to starting this resort, decided to build a community college in Mammoth Lakes at the age of 70. I had the privilege of serving with him on a foundation to realize his dreams before his passing in 2020 at the age of 104.
With 945 vertical metres of groomed slopes served by 28 lifts, the ski resort is my favorite winter recreation area and a fantastic place to live. I took this image on a chilly winter morning when the snow level was so high, you could barely see the tree tops. Since childhood, Aristotle's quote, "Where there is no vision, the people perish," has been a huge influence on me. I continue to extend and interpret its meaning through my photography as I capture images that hopefully inspire, amuse and gladden. At the same time, perhaps my images will also help document the beauty of Mother Nature and our responsibility to care for her.
