Description
Before the storm broke through these ominous dark and gloomy gray clouds at the Snowcreek Resort in Mammoth Lakes, I could see a single sunray casting its light through a fast moving cloud that was driven by the approaching storm. The brilliant light was cast across the meadow just below Mammoth Mountain to my right, out of site in this image. By quickly seeking shelter from the rain under a nearby condominium balcony, I was able to set up my tripod and anticipate when the light might shift from the meadow to illuminate the notable landmark called Mammoth Rock. The wind cooperated and the lone sunray quickly pierced through the cloud to illuminate my subject. Then it quickly marched like the USC Trojan band down the meadow and on into town.
Though overshadowed by nearby Mammoth Mountain, Mammoth Rock dominates the upper part of Snowcreek Meadow. It is made of a limestone and marble formation, giving it a bleached-white look and is a favorite of the local residents.
